Here you will find 9 of our top recommendations. Choosing and purchasing any of these will lift up your guitar tone to new fuzzy proportions.

What Do I Look For In A Fuzz Pedal?

There are many things that I considered when looking at these:

  • Something that worked well with both playing lead or rhythm.
  • Affordable.
  • The settings and options that it give me good control of the tone I am looking for.
  • How well does the tone clean up when needed.
  • Genres of music I play – a fuzz that works well for rock, metal, drone, blues, doom, psychedelic and more!
  • Low or high volume.
  • I use both a tube and solid state amp and other pedals you are using in between. Single coils and humbuckers. I wanted something that was versatile enough to work well for everything.

Commonly Asked Questions:

What Is The Fuzz Effect?

We’ve looked at overdrive and distortion but there is also another way to dirty up your tone and that’s with a fuzz box added to your gear list! I love having the best fuzz pedal in my signal chain! When you are looking for a more original classic vintage like or 60’s sounding creamy guitar, this list of recommendations may just be the right thing for you. Be sure to check out the youtube videos and read the Amazon reviews by clicking the pedal’s image. There’s nothing like that warm and versatile tone and sounds!

Where Is The Best Place To Put A Fuzz In The Chain?

There is a huge range of these so this takes a bit of experimentation, but really all you have to do is try different live set ups and configurations to use one. It also depends on the guitar you are using (I love fuzz with a Strat or Telecaster!). My recommendations is in front of the amp – last pedal in the chain – at least that is what works for me. I especially like to use it as kind of a boost pedal to help bring my lead tones up a bit and allow it to cut through the mix easier.

How Can You Build Your Own Fuzz Pedal

Instructables has a great online tutorial for this if you are looking to build one from scratch. It includes the parts list, schematic and everything else you need – even the diy fuzz pedal instructions. You can also get a cheap kit called the Deviator Octave Fuzz Pedal Kit which gives you everything you need to do it.

Who Are The Most Famous Fuzz Pedal Users?

Of course you have to mention Jimi Hendrix! But there are other too! Jeff Beck, Erik Braunn, Randy Bachman, Billy Corgan, Keith Richards, and many many more.

The Black Key;s guitarist is best known for using a number of different vintage amps, guitars and pedals but for fuzz it is the EarthQuaker Devices Terminal Fuzz.

What Fuzz Pedal Does Ty Segall use

Ty’s fuzzy tone comes from a Death by Audio Fuzz War pedal.

What Genres Of Music Does Fuzz Work With?

A ton of different music styles! Blues, doom metal, slide guitar, stoner rock, worship, etc. Regardless of if you are using a solid state or tube amp.

Should Fuzz Go Before Or After Wah?

Personally, I like the wash before the fuzz, BUT in order to clean things up and make sure it doesn’t just end up turning into a feedback mess, you need a buffer pedal in between to help clean things up.

Fuzz Pedal Before Or After Distortion / Overdrive?

This really depends on your preference so I would recommend testing a number of different chain layout orders for this. However, I like to put the overdrive before the fuzz.

Who Are Some Famous Guitar Players That Use Fuzz?
