True to its name, the MXR M116 Fullbore® Metal Distortion pedal is built to produce the most punishing distortions and metal guitar tones ever. I have never heard anything like this ever in my life and it is enough to say that I am definitely a fan of this pedal! The pedal is capable of producing lethal amounts of ultra-high gain while turbo-charging your guitar. Many a times, in my experience, extreme gain levels are accompanied by setbacks such as additional annoying noises. In case of this pedal, the inbuilt Noise Gate takes care of the same by knocking out the noise that are generally present in case of these exceedingly high gain levels. In other words, it engages in simple and functional noise reduction. The Noise Gate also carries out a secondary function of adding tightness and definition to the syncopated metal riffs.
The MXR M116 is designed to perfection and is capable of turning the riffs into bone-crushing, searing and exceedingly intense assaults. The 3-band EQ is the highlight of the pedal. Packed with a switchable noise gate and a sweepable midrange, the pedal allows you to tweak the sound to your liking until you get the perfect tailor-made results! The pedal also comes with a Scoop switch which can be used for boosting the lows and the highs in order to get the ‘big’ metal tone. Be it the mammoth high-gain riffs or the intense solos, the MXR M116 pedal can achieve both with equal ease and efficacy, thus proving to be a great addition for your pedal board!
As evident from its name, the MXR M116 Fullbore® pedal is meant for distortion. I have been playing guitar for a couple of years now and I would categorize myself as a guitar player with experience. Based on my experience, I would say that distortion is a serious game and that there are umpteen ways to achieve the same. You can use active pickups, inbuilt preamps, power amp, preamp, post-gain EQ, pre-gain EQ and so on to achieve different levels of distortion. Most of the times, these methods are not employed together in a singular pedal, but the MXR M116 is an exception. This small metal box has the nerve to cram all of these methods of generating distortion in and be a ‘one-stop shop’ for all your distortion requirements!
One of the things that I immediately loved about this pedal when I first laid my eyes on it is its size. This tiny package is about the size of a Phase 90 or a sardine tin! As far as the specifications of this little wonder is concerned, the list is definitely quite commendable and promising. What’s impressive is that the tiny box houses six knobs and two buttons, one for kicking in the noise gate and the other for activating the mid-range scoop. The six knobs are namely Volume, Frequency, Gain, Low, Mid and High. The distortion pedal also comes with a True Hardwire Bypass and a completely analog signal path.
Since this pedal is designed for producing the most punishing and distortion known to man, therefore it is only right that you should employ it for the same otherwise it defeats the whole purpose of buying it in the first place! The best way to achieve the almost demonic distortion is to start out low and then crank the knobs up! To do this, simply turn the bass, volume and gain knobs to low and when the time calls for it, turn on the Fullbore Metal and unleash the most punishing distortion sounds for that wow effect and to raise goosebumps in case of your audience.
The MXR M116 Fullbore® is simply a delight to work with. The lowest gain settings produce a thick and edgy sound whereas the high gains produce the most devastating metal guitar tones known to mankind!
