If you are looking for an affordable, reliable and classic pedal, there is perhaps no better option for you than the MXR M152 Micro Flanger.
As you probably have already guessed, the MXR M152 Micro Flanger is a continuation of the 1980’s flagship line that has in its roster the bigger version of the MXR M162 Micro Flanger – the MXR M117 Flanger.
Everything You Need In A Smaller Size
The mini version is in many respects similar to its big brother, definitely not disappointing as to the quality and convenience that the brand has long been known for. It also features the same distinct two-pronged critical controls: the Speed knob which controls the rate cycle, and the Regeneration knob, which controls the overall intensity of the sound. True to earlier form, it features the same 100% analog bucket brigade technology which is responsible for the warm, organic tone of the pedal.
One welcome upgrade to this version is the introduction of the bypass switch which has already become somewhat of a staple in competing brands. Not to be outdone, the MXR M152 Micro Flanger is empowered with a bypass switch that allows for a smooth transition, lessening the risk of losing any tone while changing tones. Now you can go from low to mid-low range to the higher ranges without sounding like you do not know what you are doing.. This has certainly been my experience as I can experiment with more inventive and creative transitions without feeling like I sound disconnected, or that I am playing completely different and disjointed tunes.
It also offers versatile power sources as it can be powered by a 9-volt battery, a Dunlop power brick, or a separate power system that you can buy in addition to the MXR M152 Micro Flanger.
True Bypass Design
Its notable features include the mentioned true bypass switch which comes with an LED indicator that allows you to check whether your pedal is on or in need of additional battery, the switch knobs for control, and a foot switch to allow you to bypass continuously.
In terms of sound, as compared to other products in the series, the M152 somewhat gives a more chimey sound but sounds great when paired with distortion. Despite the chimey sound that you can hear traces of, the over all sound is still warm, lush and rich. The range is wide enough to allow for common necessities when playing, with no additional but unnecessary ranges that some models add a hundred of dollars for. For the average user, this pedal covers the range that is commonly used – personally the perfect range for someone like me!
I have tried this pedal on a variety of guitars and so far has found none that did not suit well or sound well with the MXR M152. Due to its size, I have made this my default flange whenever I play and I am pleased to report that I see no signs of premature wear and tear despite constant, regular, and heavy usage.
What I like also about it is that the physical pedal itself looks and feels very durable and not prone to premature damage. The pedal is extremely well-built and seems to be made for heavy use. Even though this product is in the affordable range, I did not feel like I was buying a cheap product because the build quality I got was definitely superior. The metal case and grey paint look easy on the eyes and do not seem to be easy to damage unless one is to deliberately try to. Knowing MXR’s great customer and after-sales service from past encounters, however, getting repairs once they become necessary is the least of my worries.
Overall, I am very satisfied with the MXR M152 Micro Flanger and do recommend it to anyone without the highest budget because it is affordable, well-performing and extremely durable.
